May Mothing

May mothing began rather dismally with cooler nights, cold winds and a damp sheet by about 9pm! However, there have been a few productive sessions. Here is a collection from a couple of reasonably good nights.

Precious little about this moth on the internet
but I am pretty sure it's Cycloprorodes melanoxysta
GEOMETRIDAE : Ennominae

Fisera perplexata
GEOMETRIDAE : Ennominae

Capusa sp. I think Capusa senilis.

I photographed a caterpillar identified as
Capusa senilis in September, 2007, so I know
this one is around.
GEOMETRIDAE : Ennominae

Zyganisus caliginosus (Australian Goat Moth)
COSSIDAE : Cossinae
I'm not 100% sure but I think these two might
be Achyra affinitalis
CRAMBIDAE : Pyraustinae

Hi JL
Nice moths, especially the Geometrid. (no2 is my favourite.)
I had nothing for 2 weeks, but it has started to rain in the last few days, and I am inundated with Swift Moths at my front door.
I find them very hard to tell apart. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.
Is the Moths forum still working? I haven't seen any traffic from Duncan or Donald in recent weeks.
Cheers
Denis

Hello Denis,

As far as I know the Yahoo forum is still going.

The Hepialids can be VERY HARD to correctly identify. In some cases, a microscope may be required!

Off to visit your site!

Your site is a great aid to beginners like me (http://evc23bohosouth.wordpress.com/fauna/invertebrates/moths/).

The last specimen in this post looks like the Tree Lucerne Moth, Uresiphita ornithopteralis, no?
